Sound games are essential in preparing the child for language. Sound games are played daily and are the foundation for the phonetic system of reading that is used in the Montessori method. Sound games bring to the child’s awareness that words are made up of many sounds. 

This material focuses on the initial phonetic sounds of words (the vowels are short vowel sounds). These mats can be used for teaching phonetic sounds, letter names, vocabulary enrichment, and sorting & classification of sounds.
